Target definition: Who’s Your Potential (or Effective) Customer
As you define the problem you are solving, you should naturally be thinking about the potential customers who have this problem. In the Target Market section of your pitch, you will define exactly who has the problem you are solving and figure out how many potential customers you will be trying to sell to.
One of the hardest things for a startupper is to get realistic view of the competition. Investors grimace when they hear “there is no competition” because the most of the times, it’s just not true. But on the other hand, what’s the point of starting a new business when there are lots of competitors, trying to get a small place in a crowded space? Entrepreneurs often get lost somewhere between “no competition” and “too much competition”. This leads to unconvincing business plans or, worse, a strategy that’s blind to real competitive threats. Include the things that your competitors have to their advantage in your Startup Pitch, and state how you are different or how you have an edge over these already-established businesses.
A value proposition consists of the sum total of benefits which a vendor promises a customer will receive in return for the customer’s associated payment. A strong value proposition speaks directly to your target audience and tells them exactly why they should purchase your products and services. It is a clear statement of the results a customer will receive from purchasing your services and products.
