Detailed Explanation and Troubleshooting for this Action
To Responding for the questions and feedbacks i decided to put here this note. There is some misunderstanding regarding what kind of images you can use with this action. There is no strict terms here regarding the types. It could be a picture, a photo, an illustration or even text as well. Resolution of the original image almost does not matter, as you can see below i picked for this demonstration a small 350×350 pixel image.
What is important technically the image should have to meet some requirements. First of all, the subject has to be dominant on the original image. Not necessary to use isolated images, (as you can see on the statue in the first screenshots) but the object or theme should be significant otherwise the result could be indelible.
Better if your photograph have correct brightness and contrast. If the Photographs is underexposed or the object melting into the background you might not get the wanted result. If the Photo has a nice depth of field, the object exceeds from the setting your result will be amazing. Let me show you:
This image is a low resolution jpg. The object is not isolated at all. However the photo has correct brightness and color and nice depth of field.
After when enlarged the picture into the .psd file (called panel) just activated the action and got the 4 colored folders. By changing the opacity of the folders i adjusted to the final results. Here i removed the paper pattern and use only white background with the desaturated “original image” in 20% opacity.
With the patterned background the result is very similar compare to the preview images. The settings (opacity of the folders) here are almost the default.
Finally an another combination, no needed to use again the action, just change the folder’s opacity.
Troubleshooting for gloomy, dark or homogeneous picture
You might want to use this action on a picture where the background and the object has similar dark color. There is a solution. You dont have to do much things except change the blending mode and the opacity of your “original” picture’s layer. First you use the action on your picture, for example this one.
The result can be depressing. And its even not better if you try to change the Pencil/Paint/Charcoal/Splodge folder’s opacity. Here is the standard result what you see after the action is done. But below the four folders, your original picture is still there. Actually renamed the layer to “Original”
Now, here is the simple solution: Just change the “Original” layer’s blending mode to Vivid light and the opacity to 50-60%. With this picture i set the Pencil90% and the Charcoal 10%. Another two folders (Paint and Splodge) are 0%
